Knowledge
in Motion Program Featuring the
JMSL Numerical Library

With the release of the JMSL™ Numerical
Library for Java™ applications, Visual
Numerics has introduced the Knowledge in Motion
education program for JMSL. The
industry-standard IMSL™ Numerical Libraries
are offered in 100% Java and this opens up a new
learning environment for professors and
students. It will allow greater learning of
mathematical and statistical analysis and
charting on one of the most open and widely used
platforms available.
Professors of accredited universities or
colleges who plan to use JMSL as part of a
course offering are encouraged to apply to
become a charter member of the Knowledge in
Motion Program.

July Tech Tip -
PV-WAVE
Optimizing a Plot Window's Aspect Ratio
The aspect ratio of a plot window is the
window's height divided by its width. Does the
aspect ratio of a plot window really matter for
visual data analysis?
The answer is "yes it does." The
following example is taken from William S.
Cleveland's excellent book, The Elements of
Graphing Data, 1994, ISBN 0-9634884-1-4. The
example concerns plotting the annual number of
Sun spots recorded from 1749 to 1924.
