Optimizing a Plot Window's Aspect Ratio

The aspect ratio of a plot window is the window's height divided by its width. Does the aspect ratio of a plot window really matter for visual data analysis?

The answer is "yes it does." The following example is taken from William S. Cleveland's excellent book, The Elements of Graphing Data, 1994, ISBN 0-9634884-1-4. The example concerns plotting the annual number of Sun spots recorded from 1749 to 1924.
